The final grand slam of the year takes place across 22 courts at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, New York. The event was founded in 1881 and a originally played on grass courts until moving to the National Tennis Center in 1978 when it switched to hard courts. In fact, between 1975 and 1978 it was played on clay too, making it the only Open to have been held on all three surfaces. The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, being typically American, boast the largest tennis court in the world, the Arthur Ashe Stadium (pictured), holding just shy of 24,000 people.

For 2026 the field for both the men’s and women’s is more wide open than ever, with four or five men that could easily win it, including four time winner Djokovic (last won 2023) and the new rivals Jannik Sinner (2024) and Carlos Alcaraz (2022 & 2025). It’s the pinnacle of European club football and the competition every fan wants to win and this year with no less than five English teams in the competition and this means even more attention than before. Liverpool are of course the record English side in the competition and were finalists in 2018 and 2022 and won the competition in 2019 and they will be looking do to well this year with a new manager.

This year, however, it will be PSG, champions for the past two years back-to-back, along with record champions Real Madrid who will be the clubs to beat. Form 2024-25 the competition expanded to 36 teams with a new league phase replacing the group stage.  This now means 8 league matches between September and January (no winter break anymore) with four home and four away ties all against different teams.  The top 8 go straight to the last 16, those who finish 9-14 in the league contest a two legged play off in February with the 8 winners progressing to the last 16.

From that point it is a straight knockout as we are familiar with.  The top 8 league teams are seeded at the last 16 stage but country protection is removed now.  The knockout draw in February now also plots out the route to the final, as with the likes of the World Cup, which helps ensure the 8 seeded teams are more likely to make it to the later stages – as if the big teams needed anymore help.

The St Leger dates all the way back to 1776 – in fact 2026 is the prestigious 250th anniversary of the classic race.  It is as much a part of British summer time as the Henley Regatta, Wimbledon or Royal Ascot. With no less than 30 races over four days, 7 of which are group races, including; the Doncaster Cup, Champagne Stakes, Park Stakes, Flying Childers Stakes, May Hill stakes and Park Hill stakes, this is without doubt one of the biggest racing meetings on the flat racing calendar.

The group 1 St Leger on the Saturday of course dominates the card. It is the longest of the British classics, run over 1 mile, 6 furlongs and 115 yards and commands a prize fund in excess of three quarters of a million pounds with over £445,000 for the winner. A mainstay of the flat racing calendar, it is perhaps not as prestigious as it once was with subsequent modern events like British Champions Day still to come, but it is still one of the most loved and watched races in the world.

Being one of the final big group races of the flat season the bookies will have tons of offers and features for this meeting. It is also a good one for punters who at this point can have more certainty of the horses in form as they hit the peak of the season.

The Ballon d’Or, or Golden Ball in English, has been awarded since 1956 and is given by France Football to the player voted by football journalists from around the world as the best. Although the award has been linked to FIFA in the past it now stands separate to the less cared about ‘Best FIFA Men’s Award’ (formerly the FIFA World Player of the Year) – although the winners are almost always the same.

In 2026 the awards will be held in late September at the Theatre du Chatelet. Lionel Messi has won the award a record 8 times and Christiano Ronaldo is in second with 5 trophies. Of the 10 players to win the award more than once Kevin Kegan is the only Englishman to win the award more than once, with George Best, Michael Owen and Bobby Charlton (winner of first ever Ballon d’Or) the only other home grown winners.

The winner for 2026 is unlikely to be home grown but there is a great chance it might be won by a Premier League player again after Manchester City’s Rodri won in 2024.
